On September 21st, a mass shooting occurred at the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya, resulting with at least sixty seven people dead. It was believed that a group of about ten to fifteen took part in the assault, although after investigating into the dilemma the police chief says that it was around four or six. The four men predicted to be the ones involved are Abu Baara al-Sudani, Omar Nabhan, Khattab al-Kene, and Umayr, are all believed to have died in the raid. The Al-Qaeda linked group said to have been part of the attack for Kenya's military involvement in Somalia.
One may argue that the releasing of the believed suspect's names is too early, having seen in aired footage that there were four attackers calmly searching the mall with machine guns in their hand. Kenya Defense Forces spokesman Maj Emmanuel stated, "I confirm these were the terrorists: they all died in the raid." Also, a Kenyan security analyst told BBC that at least two of the names should be recognized by the Kenyan intelligence services. Kenyan police chief David Kimaiyo told Kenya's KTN television that: "None of them managed to escape from the building after the attack," This conflict would be difficult to solve without any of the suspects being available to question.

  1. The suspected shooters of the West Gate mall at Nairobi Kenya are identified. Great...now what? There are sixty seven innocent civilians, and dozens more injured. Families have lost fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, and even infants. When will the violence end? Will there ever be a mutual understanding between all humans that life is to great of a force to be ended by other humans. Hopefully the families of the unfortunate victims at the mall that day at least have some closure.

  2. Contrary to Aram's beliefs, maybe it is, in fact, better to have these man-slaughterers identified? Reading his comment made it seem like identifying these criminals was completely insignificant. Of course there is no way to go back and protect innocent lives or to fix the broken hearts of their family members, but how could people possibly have prevented this attack? To answer his "Great...now what?",now they are to face justice and receive punishment. Moving forward, Shahe did a great job informing the audience about this mass killing. His use of quotes were admirable.

  3. Stories of mass shootings occurring all over the world robs people of their sense of security. Everyone has the right to feel secure when they are simply shopping at the mall and enjoying a day with their families. No one should be put through these types of horrors and senseless killings. The opposing sides should be able to try and find a solution through mutual understanding and peaceful means rather than violence and bloodshed.

  4. The people responsible for this terrible attack lack an important human quality, the ability to think in a rational way. If Al-Qaeda truly wants to do what is for the “greater good”, they should all just simply stop associating with other people. No matter how advanced mankind becomes, there will always be fools dragging it down.

  5. I completely agree with Ellen. Many times it is difficult for families to move passed a sudden loss, but it is easier to succumb to the idea of moving on, by knowing who the cause behind the tragedy was. Families might be filled with resentment and indignation, but the identified suspects allow them to capably grieve their loss. Excellent job, Shahe!

  6. It is all a matter of perspective and point of view. If one was affected directly by these attacks then the recognition of these mad, inhumane killers would be significant. I say significant because to those who lost loved ones, there may be no return of the lives of their mothers, daughters, sons, husbands, fathers, grandparents, and grandchildren; but knowing who has done such an irrational act of violence will further increase the chances of justice being served.

  7. It is tragic to read about this event, because many innocent people were injured or murdered without having committed anything. It is all a matter of being at the right place at the right timing. These people had families to go back to and their lives ahead of them. The killers had committed an inhumane act, and then killed themselves in the process. There was no satisfaction. Good job Shahe!

  8. It is terrible to hear about another mass murder terrorist attack. Hearing about any type of tragic event is always dreadful and saddening that it still goes on. It is great that the murderers have been caught but what happens after? There are still sixty seven innocent civilians dead for no reason. Just because of some terrorists who have chosen to go out and spray bullets. Good job explaining the story, hopefully the violence will end soon.
